A Place In The Sun in France.

Living in rural France can offer a unique experience that is different from living in bustling cities. While rural areas can offer a slower pace of life and a closer connection to nature, there are also certain realities that come with living in these areas.

I moved to Normandy in December 2016 to manage a horse farm. Immediately I noticed there is less noise pollution, fewer cars, and fewer people overall. This can be such a blessing as it is refreshing to live in a peaceful environment with less stress and chaos, less traffic and less people rushing around.  On the other hand, this does not suit everyone. Friends who stay with me find the silence to be a bit weird, especially at night. There is little if any artificial light of street lamps, and the benefit is that it gives marvellous night skies.

A reality of living in rural France is that access to certain amenities. For example, grocery stores and shops may be farther away, and public transportation may not be as readily available. This can make it more difficult to run errands or go out for a night on the town. However, many rural areas have their own charm and character, with small businesses and markets offering unique local products and services.

Some areas in rural France have limited access to healthcare. There may be fewer doctors or hospitals in the area, and emergency services may take longer to arrive in case of an emergency. However, many rural areas have close-knit communities where neighbours look out for one another, and this can provide a sense of security and safety.

So, it pays to speak the language and join in with the locals so you get to know everyone around you for a greater sense of community and connection. Many rural areas have strong traditions and a sense of history, and local residents take great pride in their local culture and customs. This can create a strong bond between neighbours and a greater sense of belonging.

A major economic reality of living in rural France is that it may be more difficult to find work. Rural areas tend to have a lower population density, and there may not be as many job opportunities as there are in the cities. This can make it more challenging for people to find employment, especially if they have specific skills or experience. However, many people who live in rural areas work remotely or start their own businesses, taking advantage of the peaceful environment and lower cost of living. As long as you have a good internet connection you can start to run your own online business.

For me, living in rural France has had challenges such as limited access to certain amenities, however, there are also many benefits such as a slower pace of life and a strong sense of community.
